Dermatitis is an inflammation of the skin that produces scaling, flaking, ticking, color changes and often itching. Acute dermatitis attacks may result in crusty scales or blisters that ooze fluid. The most common cause of dermatitis is allergies. It is also be caused by contact with perfumes, cosmetics, rubber, medicated creams, and ointments, stress, plants (poison ivy), metals (gold, silver or nickel) found in jewelry.
Some people with dermatitis are sensitive to sunlight. Dermatitis spreads if it is in constant contact with other skin and becomes more severe. Contact dermatitis typically causes the skin to develop a pink or red rash, which may itch.
Causes of contact dermatitis are poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, certain herbs, flowers, fruits, and vegetables. Chemical irritants including detergent, soaps, chlorine, and some synthetic fibers, nail polish remover, antiperspirant and formaldehyde (found in permanent-press fabrics, polishes, artificial fingernail adhesive, particle board and foam insulation).
Nummular dermatitis consist of distinctive coin shaped red patches that are most commonly seen on the legs, buttocks, hands and arms on people over 55. Living in a dry environment or taking hot showers can cause this condition. Dermatitis can also be caused by other skin conditions.
Seborrheic dermatitis consist of greasy, yellowish or reddish scaling of the scalp and other hairy areas, as well as face or genitals. Caused by over production and blockage of oil glands.Stasis dermatitis is caused by poor circulation. Veins in the lower legs fail to return blood efficiently, causing pooling of blood and fluid build up. Atomic dermatitis or eczema causes the skin to itch, scale, swell and sometimes blister.
Grapefruit Seed Extract
Eczema and Dermatitis: A chronic itchy skin disease caused by food or chemical allergies. It usually appears on the inside of the elbow and knees and on the face or wrist. Try to eliminate offending foods or chemicals. Do not wash with soap. Mix (?) drops grapefruit seed extract with 2 oz. (1/4 cup) olive, sesame, avocado, almond or vegetable oil and rub into affected area twice daily.
