Skin hives is a common allergic reaction in which a rash or welts appear on the skin. Skin hives are quite itchy and can last just a few minutes to several days before going away. However hives can be a sign of more serious problems especially when accompanied by symptoms such as difficult breathing.
Symptoms of skin hives are raised, whitish or reddish usually itchy welts of varying size surrounded by a rash. Swelling below the surface of the skin burns rather than itches. Often around the eyes and lips and less frequently on the hands, feet, throat (on mucous membranes) or on the genitals. These symptoms indicate an allergic reaction know as angioedema.
Causes of skin hives are when an allergen invades or irritates the body, it causes the body to unleash chemicals known as histamines. Common allergens that can provoke hives include milk products, fish, nuts, drugs such as penicillin's and aspirin and various food additives, emulsifiers and flavoring and preservatives.
Other causes of skin hives include extreme cold (hypothermia) or heat, stress and pressure on the skin may induce an attack of hives. Some other causes are insect bites, infections such as strep throat in children and hepatitis B in adults. And in very rare cases blood transfusions cause hives.
